The Best Las Vegas Shows for Kids, Pre-Teens and Teens
Written by: Helen V. in January 2013
Well, you did it. You are booked for a trip to Las Vegas and now need to figure out what shows are appropriate for your children. Las Vegas has several phenomenal shows on the Strip. So, let’s start with the all-ages family friendly category.
ALL-AGES: The two shows below are the best shows on the Las Vegas Strip for the entire family. That’s right, kids from ages two to twenty-one will enjoy these productions. First, is the Blue Man Group. The show’s name is pulled from notable blue-painted faces of the performers. The show itself is close to two hours long and is an interactive event. The show is at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino. If you have a AAA card then feel free to mention it when booking your tickets. An additional discount does apply.
The next all-ages show is Mystere by Cirque du Soleil at the Treasure Island. The show’s concept follows a giant baby as it follows strange colors, meets dancers and acrobats, and bounces to the music. The show is an hour and a half long. Tickets do sell out often so book in advance if you can. As a bonus, check out the pirate show (outside the casino) for free!
Note: If you are looking for another all-ages Cirque du Soleil show then try Zarkana. This show is at the New York New York hotel and casino. Between the two, Mystere is the better choice because it entertains everyone. On the other hand, Zarkana offers an amazing sensory experience for little ones. The story itself lacks, which is why little ones will enjoy it more than teens or adults.
If you have PREE-TEENS (ages ten to thirteen) there are some really entertaining shows that will make them feel apart of Vegas’ nightlife scene- but without all the nudity! Terry Fator at The Mirage is a perfect show for pre-teens. The show is filled with comedic impressions and singing through the use of puppets, seven of them to be exact! Prices for this show are more than reasonable, too!
Another option for the best pre-teen family show in Las Vegas is Nathan Burton’s Comedy Magic at Planet Hollywood. This show is super cheap when it comes to Vegas standards. Less than twenty-five dollars per person, the hour long magic show has showgirls, a bit of comedy, and a theatre to make the pre-teen kids feel like they are spending a night on the town!
Love by Cirque du Soleil is another wonderful choice for entertaining a pre-teen age group. The show’s music is, obviously, an incredible tribute to The Beatles. The theater is infused with the smell of patchouli a 1960’s favorite when it came to scents.
It can be hard to please TEENAGERS, especially in Vegas. Teens are often too old to hang-out in a Kids’ Quest babysitting arcade all day. But, they are too young to walk the Strip alone (there is a curfew in Vegas for minors) and there are many shows that may be appropriate for teens but still have a strict 21+ policy. Don’t fret, you do have options.
To help keep the teenagers entertained in Las Vegas check out the following shows. "V" at Planet Hollywood. This vaudeville show, with a variety of different acts, is ninety-minutes long. You can let the teenagers enjoy the show while you stay behind to gamble without worrying about what they are watching. There is no nudity in this show. However, the jokes and content is on the border of being "blue" so it might be a good idea not to bring younger children.
Another "best" when it comes to Las Vegas family shows on the Strip is Legends in Concert at Harrah’s. Tickets are $49.95. Add ten dollars, per ticket, for the VIP experience. The lineup changes nightly, which is a good thing because you can see this show over and over without catching the same production twice! The show has music impersonators spanning decades. Everyone from Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder to Lady GaGa and Bruce Springsteen appear on Harrah’s stage. This is one show that really appeals to teenagers who love music!
If your teens are fans of Cirque du Soleil then try "O" at Bellagio or KA at MGM Grand. Don’t worry about putting the kids in the balcony, either. The second row balcony seats are just as good as floor seats and will save you money. Like Zarkana, "O" has a story line that drifts and can be hard to follow at times. Impatient teenagers might not love the story, or even understand it, but they will not be able to deny how amazing the acrobats and visuals are.
Las Vegas is always welcoming in new shows. Some shows, even if they don’t feature nudity or profanity, still do not allow children to attend simply out of concern that they may talk or interrupt. And, since many tickets are non-refundable, it is always a good idea to check our reviews and age policies before finalizing your booking.
The Top Las Vegas Shows for Kids and Families
Written by: Tina J. in October 2012
I have grown up in Vegas and now that I have my own family, I am always looking for fun, kid friendly shows in Las Vegas that we can attend together. Surprisingly, there are quite a few options of Las Vegas shows for kids.
You can go as a local and visiting families can actually come to Vegas and have some activities for everyone to enjoy.
Come one, come all to the Big Top! Well, a new and wild version of the Big Top, that is. Vegas has several different circus type shows in the Cirque Du Soleil family and each one is unique.
The KA Show at The MGM Grand on the Strip is full of acrobats and aerial stunts, with interesting characters in amazing and over the top makeup.
The "O" Cirque Du Soleil show at the Bellagio is water themed. This show makes a big splash (literally) with synchronized swimming and water stunts.
Perhaps the Cirque show that is most true to what you imagine a circus to be is the Mystere Show at Treasure Island. Here you will see lots of trapeze acts, amazing feats of balance and performers bouncing on trampolines. Mystere feels most like going to the circus of your youth and will have the things kids have heard of seeing at the circus but with twists you’ve never seen. Although the performers may be a little scary to children at first, they will fall in love once they see what they can do.
Comedy Shows are always fun and despite the fact that Vegas is known as "sin city", there are some clean and family friendly comedy acts available. The Mac King Comedy Show at Harrah’s is one of the few with show times during the day. This is a treat for families who want to bring their children to a real Las Vegas show without dragging them down to the Strip after dark.
Some people may recognize Nathan Burton from his appearances on America’s Got Talent. His show offers all of the comedy and magic you have seen on television but it is much more exciting to see it live.
Finally, the Las Vegas Comedy Magic Show with Mike Hammer is a fun choice but only for those with children who are over the age of 13. This show is located in the 4 Queens Hotel in downtown Vegas so it makes a nice break from the crowd of the Vegas Strip.
Some additional shows that do not fall into any particular category include the Blue Man Group at the Monte Carlo. Kids will be intrigued to get a real look at the crazy blue men they see adorning taxi cabs and billboards all over the city. These men in blue face paint create music from non-traditional materials. It is one of a kind.
Planet Hollywood offers two shows in their Miracle Mile Shops area - the V Ultimate Variety Show and the Popovich Comedy Pet Show. The variety show offers every kind of entertainment you can imagine and the sweet Comedy Pet Show has taken stray animals and taught them tricks. These are great options for families and because they are located in the shopping area rather than the casino, it is preferred by parents.
Finally, the show I loved best when I was young is still thrilling crowds today. The Excalibur offers the Tournament of Kings Show. You can attend just the show or opt to have the dinner version, for an additional fee, where you eat with your hands like in the days of Knights and Ladies. It may be a little messy to let the kids tear apart their chicken and pick up their potatoes but it sure is fun! Cheer on the Knight assigned to your seating area as he battles with others to the death. O.K., it is not to the death, but crowds get into this scene as if it were, screaming and cheering for their beloved knight. My kids love this show and have been more than once so it does not get old.
Speaking as someone who knows, there are Las Vegas shows for kids, you just need to look around a bit to find them. Once you do, you will find that they are pretty appealing to the parents too.
